The Ultimate Guide to Solana Address Lookup Tables (LUTs) Management

If you're building on Solana or managing a complex wallet, you've likely encountered Address Lookup Tables (LUTs or ALTs). Your wallet may hold accounts you've likely never seen, acting as an integral part of Solana's v0 transaction infrastructure. However, they won't be supported in the upcoming v1 transaction shape, meaning over time they will become obsolete.

What are Address Lookup Tables (LUTs) in Solana?

Address Lookup Tables (also known as ALTs) are on-chain accounts that store a list of addresses. They were introduced to optimize Solana's Versioned Transactions.

A standard Solana transaction can only reference a limited number of addresses due to packet size limits. By using a LUT, a transaction can reference an address by its 1-byte index within the table rather than its full 32-byte public key. This allows a single transaction to interact with a lot more accounts, significantly increasing the complexity and power of decentralized applications (dApps) on Solana.

Why Do LUTs Cost SOL (Rent)?

Because LUTs are on-chain accounts that store data, they hold SOL rent just like any other account, except it can often be a lot more due to the size of the table.

The good news is that this rent is fully refundable. When you no longer need the LUT, you can close it and reclaim the entire SOL deposit.

⚠️ The Danger of Blindly Deactivating LUTs ⚠️

Before diving into how to manage your LUTs, it is critical to understand the risks. Do not blindly deactivate LUTs unless you are certain its unused, or are completely cleaning up a wallet out.

Apps may still depend on existing LUTs, and deactivating a LUT can cause transactions to fail if the app or program does not account for it. The major challenge with LUTs is that it is very difficult to figure out exactly which app or program created a specific LUT without deep on-chain transaction archeology. Because of this ambiguity, you should exercise extreme caution when deactivating a table you don't recognize.

How Token Studio approaches this issue

To combat this ambiguity, Token Studio has introduced a solution. Token Studio automatically discovers every LUT your wallet controls, displays its contents and locked SOL, and lets you seamlessly manage them.

More importantly, Token Studio marks its own LUTs by featuring studio11111111... as the very first address in the list. This makes it instantly recognizable that the LUT was created by Token Studio.

How to Manage Your Address Lookup Tables

Practicing good "on-chain hygiene" by closing unused LUTs is a great way to reclaim locked SOL. Here is the step-by-step process:

1. How do you deactivate a LUT?

An active lookup table cannot be closed immediately; it must first be deactivated. Deactivating a LUT marks it as unusable for new transactions. This is a crucial safety step to ensure that no new transactions can rely on the table while it's in the process of being dismantled.

To deactivate a LUT, the "authority" (owner) of the table must sign and send a DeactivateLookupTable instruction. You can do that within Token Studio's wallet view by clicking on the LUT you want to deactivate's dropdown menu and selecting Deactivate.

2. What is the Cool-down Period?

After deactivation, the LUT enters a mandatory cool-down period.

3. How do you close a LUT and refund the rent?

Once the cool-down period has passed, the table's status changes to "inactive."

At this point, you can execute a CloseLookupTable instruction. This action:

You can do that within Token Studio's wallet view by clicking on the inactive LUT drop down menu and selecting Close & Recycle. There are no penalties or partial deductions when closing these accounts; you get 100% of the rent back.

Who can close or deactivate a LUT?

Only the wallet address designated as the "authority" of the lookup table can sign the instructions to deactivate or close it. If the authority was set to None during creation, the table can never be closed, and the rent is permanently locked.

Are there tools to help manage LUTs?

Yes! Token Studio surfaces these to you directly, allowing you to easily discover LUTs your wallet controls, view the locked SOL, and execute deactivation and closure instructions.
