What are Solana Merkle Trees?

Discover how State Compression and Merkle Trees are revolutionizing digital asset creation on Solana, and learn how to easily create them yourself.

The Magic Behind State Compression

On the Solana blockchain, Merkle Trees, State Compression, and Compressed NFTs (cNFTs) work together to drastically reduce the cost of storing data.

A Merkle Tree is a cryptographic data structure that summarizes a massive dataset into a single, compact "root" hash. Instead of storing every single piece of NFT data individually on the ledger (which is incredibly expensive due to rent costs), State Compression stores the full data securely off-chain. Only the tiny cryptographic Merkle Root remains on-chain.

This allows the network to independently verify the integrity of the data without the heavy burden of massive on-chain storage. This breakthrough technology can make minting digital assets 2,400x to 24,000x more affordable!

Compressed NFTs (cNFTs) & Bubblegum

The most prominent application of this technology is the creation of Compressed NFTs (powered by Metaplex Bubblegum). Despite being heavily "compressed" off-chain, cNFTs function identically to standard NFTs for the end user.

This massive cost-efficiency has enabled creators to distribute millions of assets to their communities for mere fractions of a cent per NFT.

How to create a Merkle Tree?

Creating a Merkle Tree used to require writing custom code or navigating complex Command Line Interfaces (CLI). Not anymore.

With Token Studio, creating and managing a Concurrent Merkle Tree for your compressed assets is incredibly simple, with an intuitive visual interface built directly into the app.

Creating your tree with Token Studio:

Whether you're planning an massive 1-million NFT airdrop or just experimenting with State Compression, Token Studio puts the power of Merkle Trees right in the palm of your hand.

Can you close a Merkle Tree to recover the creation cost?

Unlike Address Lookup Tables (LUTs) and many other Solana accounts, you currently cannot close a Merkle Tree to recover the SOL rent used to create it. Because a Merkle Tree acts as a permanent ledger of compressed state changes, closing it would invalidate the data for all assets that rely on it. Keep this in mind when provisioning a new tree.
